Life today often feels like an endless race, sprint, and to-do list, with emails and notifications buzzing, calendars overflowing, to-do lists multiplying faster than we can check them off, even moments that are supposed to be restful can feel hijacked by the urge to scroll, consume, or produce. Do we ever really relax anymore?
And yet, beneath the noice, many of us feel a deep yearning, a call for something different, something simpler, something slower. Not out of laziness or withdrawl, but from a desire for presence, rhythm, and depth.
Slow living, is gaining traction as more people begin to ask questions like: What if life isn't meant to be lived like this? What if we aren't meant to go this fast? What if joy lives in the pause, in the present? How did our grandparents do it?
In this blog we are exploring the philosophy of slow living, not as a trend, but as a natural way of being, and the benefits that has on our mind, body, soul, and our relationships.

What Is Slow Living?
Slow living is a lifestyle philosophy that invites us to live more intentionally, mindfully, and sustainably. Rather than racing through life on autopilot, it's about aligning our days with what truly matters, whether thats slower mornings, cooking from scratch and having meals together instead of eating on the go, savouring time with loved ones, simply breathing deeply, puttering around in the garden or the yard instead of rushing off to the next activity, or simply just taking in the beauty of nature.
At its core, slow living asks us to:
Prioritize presence over productivity
Value quality over quantity
Live in rhythm with natures cycles
Choose simplicity over excess
It's not about abandoning modern life, or moving to a cabin in the woods (unless you want to, because thats a whole vibe too). At the heart of it, slow living is really about shifting our relationship with time, consumption, and connection, and finding spaciousness and depth in everyday moments.
The Fast Pace of the World We Inhabit
To understand slow living, we first need to recognize the culture we're swimming in. Mordern life glorifes speed:
Productivity = worth. Our value is so often tied to how much we can accomplish and/or produce in a day (as if we're machines?).
Constant connectivity. Smartphones and social media keep us always "on", with little space to disconnect.
Overconsumption. We are marketed to all day every day and encouraged to buy more and get better, without time to appreciate or sustain what we already have, or question if we even need more.
Stress and burn out. According to global health studies, chronic stress is one of the leading contributors to illness today. Most people I know are stressed, burnt out, and their capacity is absolutely tapped to the max.
The result? Many of us feel exhusted, disconnected, and straved for meaning and true connection. And without these very things, many of us feel an enormous amount of grief because there is a part of us that knows it isn't supposed to be like this and yet something different feels so far away. Slow living offers us an antidote, it is medicine for our modern lives.
The Benfits of Slow Living
01. Reduced Stress and Anxiety
Slowing down helps us regulate the nervous system. When we pause, breathe, and step out of constant rush, we allow our bodies to rest, repair, regenerate, and rebalance.
02. Deeper Relationships
Slow living prioritizes meaningful connection, whether that be through pausing to actually be present with someone whos talking to you, sharing meals, long walks, or unhurried conversations. Our relationships and our bonds with each other are stregthened when we show up differently.
03. Improved Health and Well-being
Cooking whole foods, spending time outdoors, connecting with the land, and syncing with natural cycles all support physical and mental well-being.
04. Greater Creativity
When we're not rushing, our minds begin to (re)open to new ideas and possibility. Rest fuels our creativity and our imagination, making more possible (from a soul aligned place).
05. Environmental Sustainability
Slow living often includes mindful consumption, local food, and less waste, choices that support the planet.
In essence, slowing down creates space for us to breahe, and for the things that truly matter.
Daily Practices for Slow Living
Slow living doesn't require a lifestyle overhaul, it begins with small, intentional choices. Here are a few invitational practices to weave into your days:
01. Morning Rituals
Instead of picking up your phone first thing in the morning, begin with a sacred pause and some stillness. Move a little slower, journal, strech, or step outside to greet the day and see the sun before screens.
I love to start my day with this journal.
02. Tech Free Time
Create and dedicate time daily or weekly without screens, and choose something more intentonal instead. Read a book, take a walk, cook something, or simply be in silence or without your phone.
03. Mindful Meals
Cook with seasonal ingredients, eat without distraction, share meals at a table with your loved one, enjoy the flavors and conversation and presence of the moment. Extra bonus for practicing gratitude while you're at it.
04. Seasonal Living
Notice the cycles of nature. Adjust your rhythms, rest more in the winter, rise earlier in the summer. We are cyclical beings, our bodies need different things in different seasons. And if you're a woman, track your cycle!
05. Intentional Consumption
Buy less. Choose items that are sustainable, long-lasting and meaningful.
06. Create White Space
Leave gaps in your calendar and embrace the art of spaciousness and doing nothing. This is so rare these days.
07. Meditation and Mindfulness
Come back to the present moment, this can look different for each of us, whether you arrive through a sit practice, on your daily walk, or through a guided meditation journey, presence supports the weight of what we are carrying.
The Connection Between Slow Living and Sustainability
Slow living and sustainability go hand in hand. When we slow down, we naturally consume less, waste less, and livng more mindfully.
Food: Growing a garden or buying local reduces environmental impact.
Clothing: Choosing timeless, durable pieces over fast fashion supports ethical industries, and also saves us money in the long run!
Energy: Living in rhythm with natural light and reducing excess energy use conserves resources. I love to practcie sun before screens, and to use as much natural light in my home environment as possible.
By choosing slow, we support not just our own well-being, but the well-being of the planet.
Creating a Slow Living Lifestyle Anywhere
You don't need to have a bunch of land to practice slow living (although thats nice too). We can create this exprience from anywhere.
In the City
Go to local farmers markets
Take daily walks in green spaces
Create a calming home sanctuary with plants and natural textures
In the Suburbs
Plant a garden or start composting
Build rituals like family dinners or weekly unplugged evenings
Support local artisans instead of big-box stores
In Rural Areas
Deepen your connection to the land and to community
Connect with local farmers
Learn traditional skills like baking, preserving, or foraging
Embrace slower seasonal rhythms
Slow living adapts to your context, its about integration and intention (not necessarily location).
How to Begin Your Slow Living Transition
If slow living feels appealing, but overhwelming, remember that it's a journey, not a destination. Start small.
01. Identify What Matters
Write down your top 3 values, and align your daily choies with them.
02. Slow Down One Area At a Time
Maybe its meals, maybe its your mornings, or maybe its the rate of consumption. Choose one place to focus and just begin.
03. Practice Presence
Notice when you're rushing. Pause, breathe, and return ot the moment: What is here right now?
04. Simplify
Declutter your home, your schedule, and/or your digital spaces. Create room for what nourishes you first.
05. Rest
Give yourself permission to rest without guilt, do you even know what that feels like? I used to think slowing down was bulsh*t, I actually said that to one of my teachers/mentors before, I told her I didn't have time for that. Funny how things change!
Slow Living as Rebellion
In many ways, embracing slow living is an act of rebellion. In a cultural that profits from our exhaustion and overconsumption, choosing to live slowly is radical.
It says:
My worth is not measured by productivity
Rest is sacred
I don't need to "earn" rest
Community and nature matter more than profit and speed
By reclaiming rhythm, rest, and presence, we not only heal ourselves, we begin to reweave a more humane and susatinable world. And lord knows we need that.
Your Invitation Forward: Choosing Depth Over Speed
The fact-paced world may never slow down, but we can. Slow living is an invitation deeper, to step out of the rat race we were never designed for, and into a more rhythmic way of being. Where presence is more valuable than productivity, where connection outweights consumption, and where rest is honoured as essential. In reclaiming slow living, we reclaim ourselves.
